I earned an M.S. in Plant Pathology from Penn State in 1977, focusing on mushrooms, and spent 12 years as a head grower for what was then Canada’s largest mushroom company. I returned to Penn State to complete a Ph.D. and currently serve as Director of the Mushroom Extension Program, leading education, outreach, and program development for the North American mushroom industry. My commercial growing experience informs practical, industry-focused programs spanning all aspects of mushroom production, including disease diagnosis and management. My research emphasizes composting and nutrition, disease management and IPM, the effects of production practices on yield and fresh quality, and evaluation of alternative casing and compost materials. Over the past 30 years, I have secured more than $20 million in funding to support multidisciplinary research teams at Penn State and many other universities’ faculty addressing critical industry challenges.
